For the Love of Community: The FMBA to Serve Jumbo Crabs at its September 23 Crab Feast

Bud Gardner's L.P. Steamers at 1100  E. Fort Ave at Locust Point is at the heart of FMBA’s Crab Feast. Gardner, friends, and members of the Fort McHenry Business Association, at its Annual Crab Feast, serve up and consume the tasty Blue Crab, which helps generate donations to charities in South Baltimore (SoBo).  Community focus and jumbo crabs make this the best crab feast on the harbor.

The FMBA was formed by businesses in 1998 to give to charities as well as support the businesses of SoBo.  The organization has been holding “feasts” for 12 years running, 7 starring crabs. During these challenging times, FMBA members are determined to throw the best crab feast ever. Past donation recipients include The Baltimore Station, SOBER (South Baltimore Emergency Relief Inc.), S. Baltimore Learning Center, Slam Poetry Program at Federal Hill Prep, Outreach Learning Center, Fort McHenry Defenders Day Fireworks, Local Soccer, and The BMI. Past sponsors include: M&T Bank, American Sugar Refining, ARC Environmental, General Ship Repair, and Tyco Telecommunications. Other local favorites The Baltimore Museum of Industry, Sign-A-Rama, ABC Party and Tent Rental, and Graphic Imaging  are among the FMBA members that provide services in kind for sponsorship. In the future, look for more information on current and past sponsors on the FMBA web site.

Crabs (Jumbo Crabs) are at the center of the FMBA event and Bud Gardners’s L.P. Steamers is at the heart of providing the Crabs. Gardner, a local Baltimore waterman all of his life, opened L.P. (Locust Point) Steamers in 1996. The Fort Ave. restaurant is ZAGAT rated and a secret weapon of concierges. Diners hail worldwide.  We asked Bud why folks should buy tickets to the Crab Feast, “ …first, the people we help and the jumbo crabs, a real value.”  That’s the spirit that embodies the FMBA.

Baltimore is among the least expensive major cities for business,

KPMG LLP study says...Charm City was ranked fourth on the list of most cost-competitive cities with a cost index of 97.1, meaning Baltimore had business costs about 3 percent below the U.S. average. KPMG said Baltimore's ranking was driven by low property tax and sales tax costs. The KPMG Competitive Alternatives study allows companies to perform a quick scan of jurisdictions to determine which can offer a cost-competitive business environment, the release said. It measured 26 significant cost components including labor, taxes, real estate and utilities, as they apply to 17 industries, over a 10-year planning period, as well as data on a variety of non-cost-competitive factors.
